Science fiction literature is often used to explore the potential consequences of scientific and technological developments. These are often called "themes". For example, a theme could be how people react to a world where robots do all the work.

Literary science fiction deals with imaginative and futuristic concepts such as advanced science and technology, space exploration, time travel, parallel universes, and extraterrestrial life. The "literary" version of science fiction means the book is usually a little better written then more pulpy science fiction, and often deals with heavy themes.

Some of the most famous works of science fiction are those that take place in a future world where humans have colonized space and the earth. These novels often include elements of both hard and soft science, such as time travel, space exploration, intergalactic warfare, or robots.

The genre was established by such authors as Jules Verne and H. G. Wells in the late 19th century. Since then, many other authors have contributed to its development with notable examples including Isaac Asimov's Foundation series and Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey series.
