Evil Magician, Reznik the Magnificent, returns…

In Quiet Fury, the 6th Promise McNeal mystery, retired psychologist and Atlanta transplant to the North Carolina Mountains, Dr. Promise McNeal, frequently looks over her shoulder since the suspected killer and circus magician, Reznik, whispered he’d be waiting for her and then disappeared. Promise isn’t sure what Reznik meant, but her sixth-sense screams danger if Reznik still thinks she holds a secret he desperately wants. Now, months after Reznik’s disappearance, security cameras in the shadowy, underground corridors of Asheville’s two-hundred-and-fifty-room Biltmore Mansion catch Reznik on video. He’s back!
As Promise learns of Reznik’s return and investigates mysterious papers found in a book she bought at auction, she worries about her son, Luke, a federal undercover agent who isn’t answering his phone. Desperate to locate Luke, Promise swallows her pride and asks Luke’s father, her ex-husband and GBI agent R.B. Barnes, for help. But R.B. won’t share what he knows. That leaves Promise with no clues to find Luke, other than an improbable dream of him repelling into caves cut into a barren, white, mountain populated by monkeys, and her nagging feeling that a part of her dream is actually true.
Meanwhile, Promise’s husband, Sheriff Daniel Allen, is on the search to find Reznik before Reznik finds Promise, but he has troubles of his own. A man who Promise’s neighbor, the eccentric Fletcher Enloe, would say “needed killing”, is murdered, and then another man is seen setting fires on the mountainside. And, as if that weren’t enough to make Daniel wish he’d thought twice about running for sheriff, an unidentified body is discovered in a shallow grave on Forest Service land, and Daniel is certain the Forest Ranger is hiding something when he insists he knows nothing about the dead man.
While Promise is determined to find Luke and help Daniel solve the puzzle of who buried an old man in a shallow grave, and who killed one of Perry County’s least honorable citizens, Reznik plays puppet master to a strange girl sent to steal the secret Promise doesn’t know she possesses. And every day, the mountain winter marches closer bringing snow and freezing temperatures, until the girl, the secret, and Reznik converge, and Promise is caught between a stalker, desperate to learn her secret, and the restless spirits of Fire Mountain as they awake to protect what’s theirs.

MURDER IN SLEEPY APPALACHIA. AND PSYCHIC CLUES FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE...

Promise McNeal is startled awake one night by a jarring dream: she sees a beautiful woman, hanging over a shallow creek, strangled to death with a red scarf. An unsettling image to say the least for a woman who recently left her lucrative job as a psychologist in bustling Atlanta for the mountains of North Carolina, hoping for some peace and quiet. Promise begins to dig into the mystery surrounding the woman’s murder…until a brand new murder occurs...and Promise’s hoped-for peace and quiet flies right out the window.

Promise has always been a little psychic, and a little embarrassed about it. But here in the mountains, the effect seems magnified. Now making her living as a struggling country-store owner, she has to rely on her psychologist’s knowledge of what makes people tick to make her way through the thicket of intrigue within the family of the dead woman.

Along the way, she makes a surprising art world find, and starts to fall in love (maybe, just a little…) with a very attractive new man. Her tentative relationship with Daniel, the father of Susan, her semi-Goth, twenty-something employee, is one of the major delights of this slightly psychic cozy mystery. Both Daniel and Susan are renowned bluegrass musicians and, well…characters. Despite what's right in front of her nose (and what Susan tells her), Promise’s psychic abilities fail her when it comes to mountain men—because Daniel is most definitely “sweet on her,” as Susan attests. And, true to form, opposites attract here—alien as he may seem to this city girl, something deeper is responding.

Meanwhile, there’s that murder mystery. Daniel, despite his endearing over-protectiveness, is able to help out there too, and so is Susan. Allthewhile, Promise’s amusingly sexist friend, Garland Wang, provides just the right dash of humor.

The fiftyish Promise is an attractive new female sleuth who’s sure to appeal to fans of cozies, especially those by Julia Spencer-Fleming and Louise Penny, and those with a light sprinkling of psychic suspense; admirers of amateur sleuths and their close sisters female private investigators; readers of supernatural suspense and psychic detective fiction of all sorts; and especially to fans of other great North Carolina mystery authors like Margaret Maron, Barbara Neely, Elizabeth Daniels Squire, and Vicki Lane.

THEN EVIL COMES KNOCKING…
Amateur North Carolina sleuth (and psychic) Promise McNeal just can't seem to get a good night’s sleep—someone’s always haunting her dreams. Lately it's been her great grandfather, January McNeal, and who disobeys their great grandfather?
So she delves back into family history, but when she finds grave robbery in there, she has second thoughts.

Then evil comes knocking.

First someone burns her barn, then the contractor she hires to rebuild it is murdered, nearly at her back door. More fires lead her to a mysterious abandoned child who seems an unlikely arsonist. And an even more unlikely murderer. Meanwhile her flirtation with sexy fiddler Daniel has blossomed into a full-blown love affair, a good thing since she can use his help (and that of his semi-Goth daughter Susan) when the child disappears in freezing weather. So a rescue’s afoot, as well as a race towards the kind of secret that makes people kill.

North Carolina ambience, a dash of romance, and a rollicking chase through history make this cozy mystery sing!

LOVE IS IN THE AIR! ALONG WITH RAGE, HATRED, AND MURDER…
A really great combination for mystery readers who love a dash of romance! Fans of this slightly psychic cozy series will be thrilled to hear that retired psychologist Promise McNeal’s about to marry her mountain man, Daniel Allen, right about…. now! The lovebirds (along with Daniel’s daughter Susan) have flown from their North Carolina home to St. Simon’s and Jekyll Island, Ga. in search of the perfect wedding venue.

But all is not well in paradise. On the Golden Isles, they find evil dressed in a summer tuxedo, a cursed Chinese chair that’s also a World War II relic, the ruthlessly ambitious TV talk show host Aileen Wang, and the secret of a sixty-year-old murder rising from the coastal fog. Really…what’s not to like?

And yet…author James has more up her sleeve. Just as the wedding party assembles, someone shoots first Aileen and then kills two possible witnesses. With that, Promise trades in her bridal veil for trenchcoat, fedora, and the famous intuition that makes her such a talented amateur detective.

Though not exactly qualifying for Miss Marple-hood or Jessica Fletcher status in terms of age—she’s only in her fifties—Promise will satisfy the kind of fan who loves to see a female sleuth of a certain age (and gentility, of course!) kick posterior, as Promise herself might say.

She's sure to appeal to fans of cozies, especially those by Julia Spencer-Fleming and Louise Penny, and those with a light sprinkling of psychic suspense; admirers of amateur sleuths and their close sisters female private investigators; readers of supernatural suspense and psychic detective fiction of all sorts; and especially to fans of other great North Carolina mystery authors like Margaret Maron, Barbara Neely, Elizabeth Daniels Squire, and Vicki Lane.

THE WEDDING VOWS DID SAY FOR BETTER OR WORSE, BUT...Somehow, amateur detective Promise McNeal didn't envision herself as a sheriff’s wife. Yet, here she is worrying about her new husband, sexy fiddler Daniel Allen, while Daniel’s out searching for a murderer. That’s usually Promise’s job!

Daniel’s temporarily stepped into the shoes of his murdered cousin, former Sheriff Mac Allen. Before it's over, of course, he's going to need her services—both investigative and psychic. He’s hell-bent to catch Mac’s murderer with the unwittingly amusing help of irascible Fletcher Enloe, one of the North Carolina characters that make this cozy series so enjoyable.

Author James ratchets up the supernatural factor when super-psychic MaMa Allen tells Promise a spirit haunting Fire Mountain is leaving the mountain to prowl among the living. Promise’s stepdaughter Susan, MaMa Allen warns, is in danger and it’s up to Promise to do something. But, as Promise sets a trap for the spirit, a frightening thunder snow moves across Perry County and the hunted becomes the hunter, exposing just how vulnerable Susan is, and how wicked a lost soul can be.

Tarot cards, a trapeze artist who doesn’t age, and a magician who really can disappear…

In the fifth Promise McNeal mystery, set in the Western North Carolina Mountains, Promise’s psychic abilities prickle when Little People of America’s past president, Dick Jest, stocks up on Cuban cigars and drives his Winnebago from Florida to build an academy for circus performers on the site of an abandoned amusement park. When the magician’s assistant is murdered in a dilapidated tram car, the dramatic, Czech trapeze artist, Ruta, draws Promise into the mystery with a strange Tarot Card deck---which she insists she’s held for Promise since 1939---and a bizarre story of the magician Reznik and the Old Towne Clock in Prague. Promise’s husband, Perry County Sheriff Daniel Allen, is determined to go with the facts of the case, but when they meet the other members of Jest’s circus family, Daniel realizes no one is who they seem, and the facts are masked in past violence and lies. Though, as the murder goes unsolved, Promise is haunted by nightmares and struggles with an elusive illness, she and Daniel are determined to bring the murderer to justice. Fact by fact, they narrow the field of suspects until another death at the academy forces them to reconsider Ruta’s wild stories and think like the killer, if they are to catch him before he disappears for good.
