Dakota Taylor is a freelance photographer in Los Angeles who has just found out that her estranged father has bequeathed his house to her. After breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, she decides to head to Alabama to see the house and decide what she wants to do with it. Arriving in Liberty, she is shocked to find out that her father was the town drunk and the house she inherited is a ramshackled heap of half-finished projects. Dakota hires Luke Wyatt, the only renovator in town and also her only neighbor. They are instantly attracted and both Luke and Dakota try to ignore it. Luke is still recovering from a failed marriage and Dakota from the betrayal of her boyfriend. As they spend their days side by side, the desire they feel for each other continues to build. Dakota tries her best not to become attached to the community or the house but the more time she spends in Liberty, the more she dreads going back to Los Angeles. They pursue a no-promises fling both refusing to commit and to become involved. But can Dakota make a new start and allow herself to fall in love with Luke and stay in Liberty? Will Luke be able to open his heart for another woman?
