Second Chance: An Pale Rider, Time Travel, Alternative History Book (Pale Rider Alternative History 1) Kindle Edition

4.5 4.5 out of 5 stars 802 ratings

Jack Reacher meets The Patriot in this exhilarating time travel alternate history series! (updated cover!)

When we lost the American Rebellion against the British in the 1700s, the world for the colonists changed for the worse.
After centuries of suffering under the oppressive thumb of the English crown, a wealthy American entrepreneur in the 21st century finds
an alien craft that can travel through time.

That man is my best friend. And he figured out how to use that alien tech with one goal in mind:
to go back in time and use our modern technology and knowledge to help the American Colonists defeat the English, with their Revolutionary War, and change the course of history for the better.

And why does he ask me, a lowly, disgraced, former police officer, to be the one to make this precarious journey and try to change history? Because after a British official murdered my wife and got away with it
, I have nothing left to lose.

This way, even if I don't make it back, the course of time will have changed and maybe, just maybe, in the new future I can help shape, America might be a free country and the woman who would have been my wife would be alive.

Those two aspirations are worth fighting for.
I only hope I can achieve the impossible and change America's future by going into the past.

I read it one day...I simply could not stop reading it.

Fast paced, so much action. I really like how the main character is not immune to injuries.

I'll be reading the rest of this series and will be telling friends and family about this excellent book and series!

I liked the action and the easy reading style. I disliked that we did not learn more of the alternative earth timeline. This would be a great book for high school students and YA. If I could I would give 4.5 out of 5 stars.

I’ve read the first five books in the series and they don’t disappoint. There are a few editing issues but they’re easy to ignore given the quick pace and vibrant narrative. Highly recommended.

This book is a bit light in characterization. The main character, "Thomas Nelson," as he is known, is the only character that is anything like fleshed out. And he comes across, to me at least, as a cold fish, not particularly likeable. The rest exist mostly was cutouts to promote the main character on his way. The story is mostly just plot.

Fortunately, there's a lot of plot, and pretty good plot at that. The story moves along nicely, the background is believable, and you do find yourself rooting for the protagonist without regard for any flaws. On balance, the novel works, and I did go ahead and purchase the second volume.

Second Chance begins in a "modern" world where George Washington and the American colonies lost the revolution. One man is sent back in time to preserve Washington's life and put the colonies into the win column. Not a bad plot idea but if you're a history person or shooting enthusiast the attention to detail is pretty bad.

I'll point out a couple of issues that I found with the book.

First the dialog is full of modern American phrases. I'm not totally sure how George Washington talked, but I know that nobody in 1776 said "okay" - the word didn't even come along until the 1830s or 40s.

I'm not an English major, but I am a bit of a spelling and grammar Nazi. Like most of these inexpensive Amazon stories, the book seriously needs a good proof reader. There are errors in tense and construction that spell check won't catch.

The author is a former marine. Unfortunately he is completely ignorant of the nomenclature and history of 18th century firearms. He uses the terms "musket" and "rifle" often in the same sentence to refer to long arms. Muskets are smooth bore long arms which were generally issued to soldiers or militia troops. They were also owned by the general public as hunting and self defense weapons. Muskets were relatively inexpensive and inaccurate beyond 50 - 75 yards. As the name implies, rifles had rifled barrels to impart a spin to the bullet. They were much more expensive to purchase and were regarded as a specialist's weapon. Rifles were very slow to load and were usually not equipped with bayonets. They were preferred hunting weapons because of their greater accuracy 100 - 150 yards.

Most of the British and Continental troops were armed with muskets with only a few of the backwoods Americans carrying rifles. A few rifles showed up in British service but they weren't common.

Rifles and muskets are two entirely different animals and anybody in the 18th century would have known the difference.

The author refers to all pistols as "flintlocks". To the best of my knowledge pistols were just called pistols. All firearms of the era were flintlocks - there was nothing else until the invention of the percussion cap in the early 19th century. In the 18th century people just carried pistols - two for a quick second shot. Cavalry troopers often carried four in holsters on their saddles. A pistol was much more useful in a melee than a sword and the blade was a secondary weapon to a firearm.

Should the author decide to do additional books in this series, I'll spend a couple of bucks to see where the story goes, but I would hope that he'd educate himself on the history of firearms.

Very fast read, keeps you on the edge of your seat. A couple of little problems with the time line. Like how would he know about Little Joe in British America? Besides that a good enough story to get me to order the entire series.

5.0 out of 5 stars Held me to the end

I’m glad I persevered through a slightly slow start. The pace and ‘hold’ soon got going though and the end of the book crept up on me. Can’t wait to start Book 2 and see how the story unfolds.
I like Michael’s writing style and the text is competently (and refreshingly) free from defects and irritants, including the sort that make me stop and read a sentence three (or more!) times in order to unravel what the author is TRYING to say.
Also, reading this has made me want to research what actually happened, in order to understand better this fragment of history.
Thank you, Michael Roberts

I absolutely enjoyed this book, I thought I may struggle with not knowing o lot about American history, but enough was described in the telling to cover this off. I have downloaded the second book in the series and see there is a third. Pitty there is not more!

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful

Had to give up. Complete rubbish. Sorry Michael but it was just to bad for words. First red flag was reference to a contemporary British TV show. It's possible that Dr Who had survived into an alternate timeline but unlikely. Then the talk about Bonanza, a sixties TV show. It just got worse from there. British troops within a Colonial held city interrogating Washington. It was all a bit pants and ridiculous. Sorry!

Great alternative history story, the action just romps along, and the wiz-bangery (couldn't think of a better 'word' 😀) is great fun.
The only reason I give it 4 stars is that it could do with another editor reviewing before publishing, a pet hate when glaring errors occur from time to time.
