Sara Adrien answers that question through her masterful storytelling, as she draws the reader into her compelling descriptions of human attraction and the ways that people cope with the many obstacles that they encounter in life. Sara Adrien’s second book in her Infiltrating the Ton Series is just as riveting as the first (both can be read as stand-alones) with many of the same emotional tugs but with totally different reasons and elements. Both books delve into the hardships Jewish families faced trying to do business and socialize with the Ton of England. Several Jewish families felt it necessary to hide their Jewish lineage while attempting to infiltrate the Ton while other Jewish families felt those that did were traitors and unfaithful to their beliefs. This book revolves around the cousin of Fave Pearler from book one, Arnold Ehrlich. Arnold was taken in by Fave’s family when he was 4 after his parents died and has been raised like a son. His family has chosen to hide their Jewish lineage to infiltrate the Ton in order to further their jewelry business. They must also win an important contest to secure their place as leading Jewelers. Hannah Solomon is Rabbi Solomon’s eldest daughter and after the death of her mother during the birth of her eighth child, Hannah has taken over the role as mother to the six youngest of her siblings. Her closest sister in age has recently married and is now expecting her first child. Hannah has raised her sister Ruthie now 10 months old since the day her mother passed and feels as though she will forever be hers and she will be a spinster taking care of her siblings. Yet one fateful day Arnold arrives at the temple to return a mended necklace of pearls to Hannah that had been her mother’s. Arnold and Hannah have never met but the pull she has over Arnold is unbelievable and unstoppable and within minutes the two strangers are sharing kisses in the temple. Then they are caught by Hannah’s aunt and the consequences of the kisses…marriage. The two will go through many issues, changing of thoughts and developing of their character before the book ends and eventually lands at a HEA on a ship.
I received a free Advanced Readers’ Copy of this book but was given no monetary compensation. I read for the enjoyment and voluntarily review so that others may know what to expect and authors may be helped by critique and encouragement.

An entertaining romance focusing on the prejudices against the Jews of England during the Regency period. The author provided a ringside seat for the battle over rich Jews who would deign to attempt to pass as non-Jews and enter the ton. Such people were hated by both sides of the issue, the gentiles among the ton who didn't want to be contaminated by them and by other Jews who saw their behavior as a betrayal of their faith and the sacrifice of those who went before. Such animosity could get dangerous, to your business and to you personally.
In this case, our young man is a jeweler who has a design for a huge, upcoming contest that could help make his family the jewelers to the Royal house. And the young woman he kisses? She's the senior Rabbi's daughter. Almost royalty in her own right, but from such a different world. His family has been infiltrating the ton for a long time. She has the deepest disdain for betrayers of the faith. Can they ever live in the same world? Recommended.

This is the second book in the series. Sara Adrien has researched the society of the Jews living in England in the 1800's. Anti-semitism is thousand's of years old, starting with our ancestor Avraham. At that time in England, the Jews who had escaped Russia and Europe, had the choice of segregating themselves in a Ghetto of their own making, assimilating or hiding in plain sight like the Marranos, their Sephardic brethren. The Pearler family has chosen the third option. They are wealthy jewelers, who hope to win a contest creating a crown for Prinny, the eldest son of King George III, the Mad King. But not only do they have to contend with the other competitors, who have no scruples including theft but also blackmailers.

Arnold Ehrich was taken in by his aunt and uncle when he was orphaned, raised like another son to them. But he feels like he owes them and will do what ever is necessary to help them win the competition. When he goes to the Great Synagogue to return a repaired string of pearls he meets Hannah the Rabbi's daughter and the player in him can't keep himself from kissing her. The kiss is witnessed by her aunt who starts wailing about her now being compromised. Her father says they must marry, but first he must travel out of town with his other children to perform the Brit Milah on his first grandson, leaving Hannah and her 12 year old brother to deal with the roofers that are due to repair the room. Arnold volunteers to stay with them and one thing leads to another that they end up at his home. This gives them time to get to know each other. Hannah had believed that she would end up as a spinster, raising her seven siblings, but now she has the chance to contribute another way to help her community. The characters are well developed and the story intriguing. I have already ordered the next book.

There were some amusing typos. And, although this is on the publisher not the author, Hannah would never wear a dress as shown on the cover.

To be honest, I wasn't captivated by the romance in this book. What interested me and made the book go so quickly was the portrait Adrien painted of the Jewish community in the Edwardian Era. For romance fans, the book is pretty standard, but for its different slant on English high society, it was a happy discovery.

Most Regency novels are written from a Catholic or Church of England POV. This family is Jewish. Some problems are the same, some are different.
A good read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fighting for the cause
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 8, 2022
This is an excellent read. A well crafted story that is set in regency London but giving a wider description of society, including a poorer, Jewish east end culture. The book exposes the hypocrisy and racism of the ‘ton’ and continues the struggle seen in book 1 of a Jewish family fighting for acceptance in upper class society. I love the character of Hannah, principled, feisty and passionate. I was surprised by the passage where the Torah scroll was rescued from a roof collapse. The leading couple had a passionate moment while holding it in a carriage. I thought that unlikely as well as shortly after when Hannah holds the scroll in one hand. The ones I have seen are much too large and weighty for that. These however are nitpicking points that do not detract from a most enjoyable novel.

1.0 out of 5 stars Proof reader still needed
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on August 10, 2022
As with the first book in this series the lack of a proofreader is obvious. Anyone who spells the public school of Eton as Eaton hasn't done much research - just one of the errors but one of the most annoying. In these days when the Internet can be used to check so many things why didn't this author use it? Shame as a good story.
